Amazon patents a drone that can recharge electric vehicles on the go
Amazon has filed a patent for a drone that will be able to charge batteries of electric cars that are in need of recharging, anywhere and anytime.
As per a US Patent office document, the company was ‘granted US patent number 9,778,653, otherwise known as Systems, devices and methods delivering energy using an uncrewed autonomous vehicle.’ In other words, it is a drone that can juice up the battery of an electric vehicle while the vehicle is on the move.
The report published an image which was reportedly submitted by the company along with the patent application. The image shows various methods through which the drone could be attached to the vehicle that is in need for recharging. This included retractable docking systems and a clamp-based method. And as the drone itself is rechargeable it won’t be hard for it to replenish itself and resume work without a big gap.
The company as per the reports had applied for the patent back in 2014. However, the fact that the patent was granted does not guarantee that the product will materialise into a reality.
Several challenges like the time duration it will take for recharging and how active the drones will be, which themselves need a lot of charging, still remain. However, the system could be a solution for electric vehicles in need of emergency power support.
